Polychromatic Creatures

Continuing their exploration of painting and the culture of cute, the students chose another objectthey felt compelled to enlarge to an abnormal scale.

First, they established the form of theirobject in a monochromatic scheme. I encouraged the students to keep painting and to keep adding color—using the original monochromatic painting as the underpainting for a more chromatically varied piece. The students hesitated. Many of the students seemed apprehensive about adding morecolor to their paintings.I decided to send the students to Painting Boot Camp where they were given such stern direction as…

“Fifteen minutes to create a background and establish space!”

“Fifteen minutes to paint the entire form of your object!”

“Fifteen minutes to add more colors!”

After completing Painting Boot Camp, the students confidence and painting skills improved.

Their once cute objects were transformed into eccentric, polychromatic creatures.
