From Pakistan to Bangladesh

lonliness

In 1971, Pakistan was divided, and east wing of Pakistan that was called East Pakistan turned into a new nation, Bangladesh. Before the birth of this new nation, East Pakistan endured a civil war and suffered a great bloodshed. India entered into this conflict to help the East Pakistanis to separate from Pakistan. The civil war turned into a war of nations. The violent struggle of the group called Mukhti Bahani and the war with India forced the Pakistani army to surrender. The corrupt politicians on all the three sides played their own part in this bloody drama.

‘Pakitan sea Bangaldesh takk’ (From Pakistan to Bangladesh) was published as ‘Dasht-e-Tanhaie’ (The Desert of Loneliness) in India. This is a story of a girl who witnessed all this turmoil and survived to see a new future. She went through the hardships of the times, sometime, by the strength of her love, and at others, by the strength of her hate.  Years after the chaos, she concluded that the people on this side of the border (Bangladesh) and that side of the border (Pakistan) and in-between these borders (India) were ready to open their arms to each other despite the cultural and religious differences, but they have always been duped either by corrupt politicians or hypocrite intellectuals. She realized that only awareness can lead these people to the new horizon where they can live as neighbors in the spirit of tolerance and brotherhood.

Life After Life

life after life

Dr Moody is a psychologist and researcher. He has received much attention in his own field as well as in the general public for the peculiar topics of his research. His work includes investigations into past lives and reincarnation as well as survival of bodily death.

‘Life After Life’ is about people who had clinically died, and were later resuscitated. All the conditions showed that their body was lifeless, and gave no sign of mind or spirit, yet they came back to their bodies in three to twenty minutes. They not only remained alive but spent the rest of their lives in a different, and profound manner. During that phase in which they were not in their bodies, they experienced certain things which they related afterwards to their close friends. Dr. Moody came to know this phenomenon accidentally, and after seeing many common elements in these accounts he decided to research on it.  During this research he met many people who had had near-death experiences, and he collected the information which is present in the book. In this book you will find first-hand reports of people who had near-death experiences along with the commentary, details and conclusions of Dr. Moody.

As a translator, I have tried my best to convey Dr. Moody’s account in its real essence with no additions or subtractions.

We talk about life all our lives but we are often somewhat afraid to talk about an after-life. And this way we impose shallow beliefs on ourselves that are given to us from different sources. I feel that this work challenges these beliefs and gives us a chance to look at some facts and to judge them on scientific grounds.

On The Last Day of Spring

Spring

On The Last Day of Spring creates a cross-cultural environment of colonial India and the sociopolitical milieu of the first half of the twentieth century Britain. It is the story of characters that appear on the stage of the novel from different socioeconomic, and cultural backdrops, and interact in the framework of the variables of life to depict a dimension of that era through their desires, deeds, and dilemmas.

It is also a novel about a community that was stuck at a point in time. It depicts the transformation of individuals under the influence of history. Their stories are reflected in the events of history; events that either recreated or destroyed them. It is also about friendship and love; love without which the hardships of life would be unbearable for these characters.

1998, Maktaba-e-Urdu Adab, Lahore.
